SALIS is a registered professional body, actively involved in the development of all spheres of Library and Information Science (LIS) by organizing various programmes such as conferences, seminars, workshops, training programmes, lectures on emerging topics throughout the year in various parts of the country through its various chapters located in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Erode, Tirunelveli, Delhi-NCR, Nagpur, etc. SALIS publishes national and international journals, proceedings for exchange of information and knowledge sharing among professionals. It has instituted several awards to motivate LIS professionals.
